As an Affiliate of BirdLife Australia, HBOC uses BirdLife’s (BLA’s) V3.0 Working List as the basis for the taxonomy of our Hunter Region checklist. This differs from the IOC checklist in use by many birders; however HBOC and BLA are primarily motivated by interests in bird conservation, for which the BLA Checklist is more appropriate. Many individual HBOC members use the IOC list for their Australian records and the BLA checklist for their Hunter Region records. Within the Hunter Region, the BLA list actually is the longer list, since it includes several albatross species which are treated as sub-species by the IOC.
A complete listing of all of the species sighted, including breeding status, is provided in the Annual Bird Reports for the Hunter Region. If you want to create a personal list of your Hunter Region sightings, an Excel version of the checklist is available from the 300 Club section of our website: Click here
