Sue and Ed Hamonet Award for Excellence in Bird Education

Introduction
This award honours the strong and lifelong commitment of two of HBOC’s life members, Sue and Ed Hamonet, to education, particularly about birds.  Sue and Ed were passionate about birds and they were strong ambassadors for HBOCs vision and aims. The award includes a certificate of achievement and a small monetary prize, courtesy of donations by the Sisters of Mercy Maitland and the Maitland Miniature Railway Club. Candidates for the award can either apply or be nominated through completing the application form via the links below.

Eligibility

Who: Any Australian citizen or overseas individual who has completed an education project on Australian birds can be nominated for the Sue and Ed Hamonet Award.

Objectives and Activities: The Sue and Ed Hamonet Award is open to the nomination of any educational project or program that:

  • Has completed an education program/project, which has contributed to bird knowledge and conservation.
  • Improves or promotes knowledge and conservation of birds and their habitat.
  • Raises positive public awareness of birds.

The program/project need not involve any direct activities within the Hunter Region but the outcomes from it must be relevant to the Hunter Region.

Nominations may include (but not be limited to) school-based projects, student projects, mentoring projects, on ground/hands on bird education/conservation actions, equipment or materials developed to support a bird education program or project.

Nomination
Short Indicative Title – approx. 10 words
Description – What was done, where and with whom in 250 words
Objectives and Justification – what was proposed to be achieved and why 250 words
Demonstrated Outcomes – how the project was evaluated and a summary of evidence describing and showing the achievement of intended and unexpected outcomes up to 10 dot points/500 words

▪ quality of the education project or program – does the nomination include all the information required for us to make an assessment?
▪ how well the project has met the stated objectives
▪ the project’s demonstrated contribution to bird education and conservation
▪ referees’ comments and reports
▪ problems overcome by the project
